A three-storey building was collapsed at Charail Khelarmath in Keraniganj on Friday morning. It was built after filling up a pond.
The building came crashing down around 8:20am trapping eight people inside, said Faruk Ahmed, in-charge of the local Fire Service Office.
Later, firefighters and locals stormed to the spot and rescued the trapped people around 9:30am, he added.
“Six families had been living in the building constructed without proper piling works and following building code and guidelines,” said the officer of Fire Service.
Officer-in-Charge of Keraniganj Model Police Station Mainul Islam told the media that residents from another five risky buildings adjacent to the collapsed one have been evacuated to avoid any risk. Utility services including gas and electricity have been cut off from the risky buildings. Poor planning and the use of substandard materials are mainly blamed for the building collapse.
However, AC Land of Keraniganj Sanjida Parveen also visited the spot. A seven-member investigation committee has been formed in this connection.
While talking to the Bangladesh Post, AC Land of Keraniganj Sanjida Parveen said, “According to locals, the building has been made after filling up a pond with sands without following proper rules.”
“The adjacent five buildings are also in risky condition. So we have marked those buildings as risky and unsuitable for living. The utility connections were also cut off, she added.”
