A 70-year-old man and his two grandchildren drowned while taking a bath in a pond in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila on Sunday.
The deceased were Abu Siddiq, 70, his grandson Pias, 8, and granddaughter Popy Akter, 6. Local residents said the two children drowned while apparently trying to save their grandfather.
The incident occurred around noon at a pond in the Ibrahim Patwari household area of Ward 6 in Shakchar Union of Lakshmipur Sadar upazila.
Abu Siddiq was the son of Abdul Mannan Patwari of the Ibrahim Patwari household area. Pias was the son of his son Abdul Aziz, while Popy was the daughter of his daughter Sumi Akter.
According to local residents, Abu Siddiq went to the pond in front of his house to bathe with his two grandchildren. After entering the water, he apparently went underwater but did not resurface for a long time. At one point, Pias and Popy entered the pond in search of their grandfather and also drowned.
Local residents recovered the bodies about an hour after the incident.
Locals suspected that Abu Siddiq may have suffered a stroke after diving into the water, causing him to remain submerged. The two children are believed to have drowned while attempting to rescue him.
Mehedi Hasan Faruk, a member of Ward 1 of Shakchar Union Parishad, said, “Three members of the same family have died. It is an extremely tragic incident.”
Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Wahid Parvez said police had been sent to the scene after receiving information about the incident. He said necessary legal steps would be taken after speaking with the family. #EK
