Three children drowned in ditches in two separate incidents at Jaldhaka and Dimla upazila in Nilphamari on Sunday afternoon.

Of them, two died in a ditch. The deceased were identified as Setu, 6, and Mim, 7, daughters of farmer Abdul Quayum and Mosharaf Hossain respectively of Gopaljhar village of Jaldhaka upazila. They were also students of class-2 of Bosaria government primary school of the village.

Local union parishad member Sirajul Islam informed that the ill fated kids went to take bath in a ditch in afternoon of today  and at that time one of them Setu was drowned as went far away from the bank.

Seeing this, the other child Mim stretched her hand to save her playmate (Setu) but he also lost in deep water.

Locals who were working in nearby fields jumped into the pond and recovered them in critical condition after a long search and took them to Jaldhaka upazila health complex.

But the duty doctors declared them dead long time before arrival in hospital.

The third child who also died by drowning in neighbouring Dimla upazila, was identified as Aminur Rahman (3), son of Shahjahan Ali of Poschim Satnai Kaliganj village.

It is guessed that the little victim slipped in the pond beside their house while playing on the bank.

Poschim Satnai union parishad chairman Anwarul Huque said that the child fell in the pond beyond notice of others in today  afternoon at around 1.00 pm.

As he was not available in the area for a long time, relatives started looking for him and at one stage found its dead body floating in pond water.

After recovery, the child was also taken to Dimla upazila health complex but the doctors declared it dead.

Two unnatural death cases have been filed with Jaldhaka and Dimla police stations and the dead bodies were handed over to relatives for burial.
