Thousands of people of 12 unions of Manda upazila under Naogaon district have been marooned due to breaching of the flood protection embankment of Shib river at the Tangra point. Due to heavy onrush of water crop fields o thousands of acres, beels and ponds with full of fish have been washed away.

According to sources, Water Development Board constructed the flood protection embankment through the east side of the Shiba river in the 80's decade.  Tengra area is situated between Manda and Tanore upazila of the embankment.

At least three-kilometre areas of Tengra is uninhibited. People living at Kamargaon union snapped the west side of the embankment during flood in 1995.

It is learnt, local people of villages Sreekhanda, Damdoma, Majhipara and Dostarampur of Kamargaon union armed with sticks and sharp weapons went to the Tengra point on the embankment and snapped the embankment.

As a result, the huge onrush of water inundated croplands, water bodies, roads, ponds and houses of 15 unions of Tanore upazila including Manda, Mohanpur and Bagmara upazilas.

Local people informed, people across the embankment were cutting the embankment points at night to save their crops. In 1995, they snapped the embankment point several times. In 2017, Water Development Board repaired the damaged part of the embankment but it was once again snapped and cut at the darkness of the night by some vested quarters.

Meanwhile, due to huge rainfall during last several days, water of the river Shiba has been increased abnormally. Turbulent water is entering through the breached Tengra point flooding Tentulia, Kalikapur, Bishnupur and Nurullabadh unions of Manda upazila, Govindapra, Nordas, Sonadanga, Aushpara and Shuvo danaga unions of Bagmara upazila, Riaghati and Ghasigram unions of Mohanpur upazila and Ganghati, Hapania, Abdipur and Amirpur villages under Kamargaon union of Tanore upazila.

Moslem Uddin, Chairman of Kamargaon union informed, people of several unions of some unions under some influential persons were snapping the embankment at Tengra point again and again which is not desirable and acceptable by any one. There should be a permanent solution of the problem.

Kohinoor Alam, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board refused to talk over this issue over mobile phone.
