Third phase of UP polls held in Sylhet

Polling was held peacefully in 77 unions of Sylhet division without any complication or untoward incident under the strict surveillance of the law enforcements.

Police, Ansar and village-police were in charge of security at every center in Sylhet during the polls. BGB was also on patrol.

The Sylhet Metropolitan Police and the district police were on standby to prevent any disturbance in the election.

In the third phase of the 10th Union Parishad (UP) elections, voters were present at the polling booths from 8 am on Sunday and it continued till 4pm.

According to the Sylhet Election Office, the unions in which the polling was held are: Silam, Lalabazar, Jalalpur, Moglabazar and Daudpur unions of Dakshin Surma upazila of Sylhet.

Meanwhile, supporters of a boat candidate at a center in Sarufaud, Charikata UP, Jaintapur Upazila, Sylhet, allegedly snatched 100 ballot papers from the presiding officer and sealed six ballots. The incident took place at 2.30 pm on Sunday. At that time 6 ballot papers were recovered from the boat.

It was learned that at around 2:30 pm on Sunday, four supporters of the boat candidate forcibly entered the room of Masud Ahmed, the presiding officer in charge of the polling station and snatched 100 ballots. 

They later sealed 78 ballots in the presiding officer's room. When the other candidates and their supporters came forward, they fled. During this time 78 sealed ballots were recovered from the boat and these were later canceled.

Nazim Kamran, a businessman from Charikata of Jaintapur Upazila, who came to cast his vote, said, "I have given my vote to the candidate of my choice in all convenience. Everyone is voting for their favorite candidate in a festive atmosphere. We want every election to be neutral.”
