‘Textbooks in Bengali crucial for medical sciences’

It has become crucial to prepare textbooks for the medical and health education in Bengali along with conventional books in English to help our next generations to advance in medical sciences.

 Director General of Bangla Academy noted poet Mohammad Nurul Huda has expressed the opinion at a workshop at Begum Rokeya auditorium of the RDRS Bangladesh here yesterday as chief guest.

Bangla Academy and Hypertension and Research Centre, Rangpur (HRCR), a sister organisation of ‘Wasim-Waleda Bahumukhi Kallyan Foundation', jointly organised the workshop.

 Around 250 expert physicians, teachers, doctors, writers, health workers, medical students, civil society representatives, local elite and media people participated in the workshop.

 Founder President of HRCR, former Principal of Rangpur Medical College (RpMC) and renowned medicine specialist of the country Professor DrMdZakir Hossain presided over the event.

 Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Director (Admin) of the Directorate of Family Planning Dr AHM Lokman spoke as special guests.

 General Secretary of HRCR and Professor of the Department of Medicine at RpMC Dr. Shah Md. Sarwar Jahan delivered welcome speech narrating the goals and objectives of the event. 

Chief Executive Officer of HRCR Md. Anwar Hossain narrated the organisation established in 2008 with the aim of serving humanity, its ongoing activities and future plans.

 Director of the Department of Administration and Human Resources and Planning of Bangla Academy Dr KM Muzahidul Islam delivered a presentation on ‘Study of Medical Sciences in Bengali: Past, Present and Future’ in the workshop.

 Secretary of Bangla Academy DrMd Hasan Kabir and Advisor of HRCR, Vice-principal of RpMC and Head of the Department of Medicine Professor Dr. Md. Mahfuzer Rahman also spoke.

 The chief guest said, "Our generation has to advance further in medical science. That is why it is necessary to prepare textbooks for medical science, practice and health education programs in Bengali in addition to English.”

 Bangla Academy is working on publishing simple and easily understandable publications based on English to Bengali translation.

 “In order to implement these activities, measures are being taken in the light of various recommendations by holding meetings, workshops and seminars with people from different levels across the country,” he added.

 Professor Dr. MdZakir Hossain said textbooks in medical science and health education programs in different countries with much lower population than in Bangladesh are published in their own languages.

 “By doing this, students of those countries can easily study to understand in their mother languages and become good doctors and health workers and provide correct advice at the field levels to make common people properly aware about their diseases,” he said.

 He thanked Bangla Academy for taking the epoch-making initiative of preparing books for medicine and health education in Bengali to make medical science easily understandable and produce good physicals, technicians and health workers.
