Following student protests at Rajshahi University (RU), Chhatra League leaders were expelled from campus on July 16. After a political shift on August 5, Chhatra Dal leaders returned and resumed their activities.
Recently, a Haleem shop has sparked controversy within the Chhatra League camp, as its founder is reportedly a Chhatra Dal member.
The shop, named 'Irani Haleem Bazar,' was established behind the university's central library about 15-20 days ago. However, the university administration ordered its removal because it lacked proper permission and was located too close to the library.
The store manager identified the owner as Md. Faizul Islam Omi, a 2016-17 student from the Faculty of Fine Arts known to be affiliated with Chhatra Dal. His connection to Shakilur Rahman Sohag, a Chhatra Dal joint convenor, has raised eyebrows.
Asadullah Hill Ghalib, general secretary of the Chhatra League branch, expressed his disapproval, stating, "Setting up a shop in a political party camp to undermine us is unacceptable. Students can run businesses with university permission, but this is not the right way."
Faizul Islam Ami explained that they sought permission from the proctor's office, but were later informed that the shop's location was inappropriate. He promised to relocate the shop by the upcoming Puja holidays.
Sultan Ahmed Rahi, convener of the Chhatra Dal branch, said, "Some students are trying to alleviate financial pressure through entrepreneurship. We welcome this, and any issues will be resolved through discussion."
Professor Mahabubur Rahman, the university proctor, confirmed that the students had agreed to move the shop soon.
