Ten-day Sultan Mela begins on Jan 15 in Narail

The ten-day long ‘Sultan Mela’ will begin on January 15 on the bank of the Chitra River at Narail Government Victoria College marking the 95th birth anniversary of internationally acclaimed painter SM Sultan.

This year, the fair will be dedicated to Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The decision was made at a meeting of the Sultan Foundation held at the confernece room of DC office on Thursday evening. Narail district administration and SM Sultan Foundation will jointly organise the fair.

The meeting was chaired by Narail Deputy Commissioner and Sultan Foundation President Anjuman Ara. Additional Deputy Commissioners Md. Yarul Islam and Kazi Mahbubur Rashid, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Salma Selim, Senior lawyer of Jashore bar Md. Manjurul Haque, District Awami League President Advocate Subash Chandra Bose, Public Procecutor (PP) Advocate Md. Imdadul Islam, District lawyers association president Syed Mohammad Ali, general secretary Uttam Kumar Ghosh, Sultan Foundation life member Sultan Mahmood and Press Club President Enamul Kabir Tuku were present at the meeting, among others. 

Sources said like the previous years, the fair signifies exposition of the country’s core culture in the form of art exhibition, rural games and folk music. The fair will feature art exhibition, art competition, bull fighting, ha-do-do, wrestling, Jari Gaan, Kobi Gaan, Lathi Khela, recitation, drama staging, volleyball and women’s kabadi.Every day seminar on the life and philosophy of the artist SM Sultan would be held at Sultan Mancha.An eminent artist will be award by Sultan Padak at the end of the mela.

The painter SM Sultan was born on August 10 in 1924 in Machimdia under Narail municipality. He died on October 10 in 1994. SM Sultan Memorial complex has been built in his home to honour him and to preserve the memory of the Sultan.
