A physically challenged teenager was stabbed to death by her stepfather at Agrail village in Lebutla union under Sadar upazila of Jashore district on early Friday. The deceased was identified as Sumi khatun, 20, daughter of Reshma Begum of the Upazila.
Reshma Begum, mother of the deceased, said they lived in Dhaka with Sumi. She begged in the street with Sumi. Sumi's stepfather Nazmul runs a rickshaw in Dhaka. They came to Jashore before the Eid ul Azha. Sumi was daughter of her first husband. She has three sons and one physically challenged daughter in this family.
Recently, Nazmul took a loan of Tk 25,000. The money was supposed to be returned after the Eid. But Nazmul could not pay the money in time. And so there was a quarrel between them on Thursday evening and later it turned into a clash.
Nazmul then left the house. Sumi was sleeping with his grandmother in the veranda of the house. Nazmul came home at late night and stabbed Sumi with a sharp knife. Sumi was seriously injured to various parts of the body, including her back and chest portion and then he fled the scene. Injured Sumi was rushed to Jashore General Hospital around 3:50 am with the help of local people. She died five minutes later from undergoing treatment.
Hospital's emergency department physician Md Abdur Rashid said the stabbing caused a lot of bloodshed. Jessore Kotwali Police Inspector (Investigation) Sameer Kumar Sarkar said police had visited the spot. A case was filed in this connection. Police is trying to arrest the killer Nazmul, the Inspector said.
