In a tragic incident, a 17-year-old student was found dead by suicide in Sirishabari, Jamalpur, on Monday evening, just hours after posting a despairing status on Facebook.
The deceased has been identified as Bishal Miah, a Class 10 student at R.D.A.M. Pilot High School and a part-time employee at Suman Pharmacy in Shimla Bazar.
According to police and family sources, Bishal posted a status on his Facebook profile in the afternoon that read, “What is the point of living if we do not worship Allah?” Approximately three hours later, he was discovered hanging inside the pharmacy's restroom.
Sujit Kumar Roy, the owner of Suman Pharmacy, became concerned when Bishal did not respond to his calls. After finding the restroom door locked from the inside, he forced it open and found Bishal hanging. He was immediately rushed to the Sirishabari Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead upon arrival.
"The patient was brought to the hospital with a ligature mark around his neck, but he had already passed away before arrival," said Dr. Debashish Rajbanshi, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sirishabari Police Station, Md. Rashedul Hasan, confirmed that the body was recovered and sent to the district morgue for an autopsy. An unnatural death case has been registered in connection with the incident.
The suicide, triggered by the online post, has sent shockwaves through the local community.
