News about the criminal activities of juvenile gangs continued to dominate the front page of most of the national dailies of the country and news agencies in the outgoing year of 2023. The activities of such juvenile groups are having adverse effects on society and the issue needs to be seriously taken care of.

The brutal laceration of cutting off the wrist of a young man in the capital’s Mohammadpur area sent a shock wave across the country and stunned the people as well. The members of teenage gang cut off the wrist of one Arman and shared a video of the incident on social media, which recently went viral.

Over 94 juvenile gangs are very active in the capital city of Dhaka. The increasing trend in juvenile gang culture is worrying us deeply.

Apart from the capital Dhaka, many young people are getting involved in various crimes like extortion, mugging, drug peddling and stalking young girls and women across the country. Common people, especially young girls and women who travel their respective localities either in urban or rural area feel helpless as the harden criminals are loafing around freely round the clock.

This similar grim scenario is prevailing in all metropolitan cities, district towns, upazila headquarters and even remote villages of the country.

Besides, they are also involved in violent and brutal crimes like murder and their delinquency is on the rise at present. Law enforcement agencies several times went tough on juvenile crimes in order to keep the derailed young men on the right track.

But the members of different juvenile gangs ignoring the law enforcers are committing serious crimes as they still get blessings from the local influentials.

We have noticed the juvenile gang members attacked a teacher with a cricket stamp, striking him on head indiscriminately in Savar. The teacher succumbed to his injuries, raising a fresh concern over security and safetyof people.

The increasing trend

us deeply

We have also noticed over the past few years that adolescents are getting involved in various criminal activities in recent days forming gangs like Disco Boys, Seven Star, Nine Star, Danger Boys and Nayan Bond. It is an open secret that a section of political influentials is transforming the teenagers into gangs to serve their own purpose.

If the young people get support from musclemen or they are used for political purpose, they become usually desperate and get encourage a committing any sort of crime. So, we feel a ‘combing operation’ is necessary to pull the reins of juvenile gang culture right now.

The law enforcers will have to get fully prepared to ensure safe movement of common people and take strict measures against the gang members. Therefore, a “combing operation” should be launched across the country immediately to curb juvenile crimes and save our next generation as well.

A significant number of teenage boys were arrested on various charges in different places of the country including capital Dhaka and its suburbs. It is deeply worrying that many boys were killed by different juvenile gangs in different places of the country.

The extent of this problem is very, very worrying and if such crime goes on unibated it would have very serious social effects. Apart from the law enforcement agencies, parents, teachers and civil society members will also have to take the responsibility of monitoring teenagers to ensure their wellbeing.

All guardians should ensure proper education to their children in time and pay attention to establish rule of law in the society. Political goodwill is a must to prevent this gang culture.

All should also remain careful so that adolescents could not be used in political meetings and rallies. Everyone should to rethink the issue as law enforcement agencies are struggling to curb juvenile crimes and work together to eliminate ‘Kishor Gang’.

All must become more conscious about the children so that they cannot get involved in criminal activities and this menace will not exist on the soil of the country.
