A teenager returning home on a bike died after allegedly falling into a roadside ditch on the Magura-Khulna highway in the Sajiyara area of Magura district.

The accident occurred on Friday night when 14-year-old Huraira Rahman was on his way back home, police said on Saturday. The underage rider was a resident of Sajiyara village in Magura's Sadar upazila.

Joynal Abedin, an officer of Magura police station, said that around 10pm, the teen's speeding bike lost momentum and fell into the roadside ditch. Passersby rescued a seriously injured  Huraira and rushed him to Magura Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. "A case of unnatural death case has been filed," said the officer. During the last Eid-ul-Fitr holiday rush, road accidents claimed 323 lives in just 15 days, according to Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Shamiti, a human rights body.

Besides, 513 people, including 63 children, were killed and 598 injured in 409 road accidents across the country in March, the Road Safety Foundation said on April 5.

According to the NGO, 147 lives were lost in 138 two-wheeler accidents, which is 28.65% of the total deaths.
