Teacher sued over shooting medical student in Sirajganj

Two cases have been filed against Dr Raihan Sharif, a lecturer of Community Medicine Department of Shaheed M Mansur Ali Medical College and Hospital in Sirajganj, over shooting a student inside a classroom.

Victim's father Abdullah Al Amin, a resident of Dhamachapa village in Dhunat upazila, filed a case with Sadar Police Station at 12am on Monday and Dr Raihan was shown arrested in the case. 

Arafat Ashik Tomal, 23, a 3rd year student of the medical college and a resident of Dhansiri Nataipara area of Bogra district town, was admitted to the hospital after he was shot and wounded by the teacher in the classroom on Monday afternoon.

 Police arrested Dr Raishan from the spot and seized his gun.

Quoting Tamal’s classmates officer-in-charge of sadar police station Md Sirajul Islam said Dr Raihan Sharif used to carry weapons and knives in his bag and deliver lecture keeping those on the table.

He used to threaten students when they asked him not to bring the weapons in the classroom.

During an exam on Monday, he scolded Tamal first and then opened fire, leaving him injured.

In primary investigation, it was proved that the gun he used was illegal and then another case was filed against the teacher under the Arms Act.

The Health Ministry has formed a three-member committee, led by Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr. Bayazid Khurshid Riaz to investigate the incident.

The principal of the college, Prof Dr Amirul Hossain Chowdhury, did not receive phone calls despite repeated bid for his comment.
