A Dhaka court has ordered the detention of Professor Sudip Chakraborty in jail in a case filed over allegations of abetment to the suicide of Munira Mahjabin Mimo, a student of the Theatre and Performance Studies Department at University of Dhaka.
On Monday (April 27), the accused was produced before the court, where the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Kazi Iqbal Hossain of Badda Police Station, sought an order to keep him in custody until completion of the investigation.
Defense lawyer Phul Mohammad applied for bail, arguing that the accused is a respected teacher who had no knowledge of the incident and was being harassed. Public prosecutors opposed the bail petition.
After hearing both sides, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain rejected the bail plea and ordered that the accused be sent to jail. Prosecution Sub-Inspector Kamal Hossain confirmed the matter, stating that no remand petition had been filed, so the accused was not placed on remand.
According to the police application, during the investigation and efforts to identify and arrest the accused named in the First Information Report, law enforcement arrested Sudip Chakraborty from North Badda at around 3:20 pm on Sunday based on confidential information. He was subsequently shown arrested in the case and questioned regarding the incident.
The investigation officer stated that preliminary inquiry revealed evidence suggesting his involvement, while verification of his identity and address is ongoing. For the sake of proper investigation and ensuring justice, continued detention in jail custody was deemed necessary. The officer also mentioned that remand may be sought later if required for further investigation.
Earlier on Sunday, police recovered the hanging body of Munira Mahjabin Mimo from her residence in North Badda. A handwritten note was reportedly recovered at the scene stating: “Sudip Sir must be paid Tk 50,000. Hani and Sudip Sir, stay well. Returning the gifts given by Sir….”
Following the incident, the victim’s father, Mohammad Golam Mostafa, filed a case accusing Sudip Chakraborty of abetment to suicide.
