To tackle Bangladesh’s escalating drug problem, the government has set up a task force in Cox’s Bazar.

The task force is already seeing major results in dismantling drug networks active in Rohingya camps and border areas.

Following a high-level meeting on 14 July at the BIAM Centre in Cox’s Bazar, chaired by Home Ministry Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the task force was officially formed through a government order on 20 July. Deputy Director of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC), Somen Mondal, was appointed as its Member Secretary.

Cox’s Bazar has long been a hotspot for drug smuggling due to its hilly and coastal terrain, as well as road, rail, and sea routes.

Drugs such as yaba and crystal meth frequently enter from neighbouring Myanmar.

The task force is working in three key areas: strengthening joint operations, increasing public awareness, and speeding up drug case resolutions.

Since 15 July, operations have seized over 2.1 million yaba tablets, 1,500 litres of local liquor, 38 kg of cannabis, 735 cans of beer, and 2.5 kg of crystal meth. A total of 347 drug dealers have been arrested.

Officials stress that community involvement is essential for lasting success.
