A segment of the embankment along the Kholpetua River in the scenic Sora area of Gabura Union, Shyamnagar, Satkhira, collapsed due to soil erosion, creating a breach approximately one hundred meters long and spreading panic among coastal residents.
Upon receiving the news, the Satkhira Water Development Board (PWDB) initiated emergency repair work on the damaged embankment on Thursday. As an immediate measure to prevent further erosion, geo-bags filled with sand are being deployed at the site. The swift response has brought a sense of relief to the anxious coastal community.
Satkhira PWDB Sub-Assistant Engineer Imran Hossain provided an update on the situation, stating, "Geo-bags are being placed along the embankment. The structure is now out of danger, and steps are being taken to make it sustainable."
Echoing this, Dr. Md. Abul Basar, Chief Engineer of the Khulna Zone Water Development Board, confirmed that work on a project to build a sustainable embankment for Polder 15 is already ongoing. "Geo-bags are being used to counter the sudden erosion. Work on constructing a permanent and resilient embankment in the affected area will commence swiftly," he said.
