Tale of a Chuadanga man with disability

A right hand disabled person is the sign of good initiator for providing works of the youths in Chuadanga district town. He has also reached the top of development of his family members through engaging in different jobs. Now he is very happy. 

The disabled person is Golam Mahbub Mukul, son of Hazu Mollah of Muktipara in the district town. He was born in a Muslim family on January 1 in 1950. After passing four years he was attacked with polio and became unable to use his right hand. 

He is the elder son of his father. They are 6 sisters and 4 brothers. After passing Bcom exam from Chuadanga College under Rajshahi University they had to face financial problems to maintain the family. His father set up a stationary store named `Tuki Taki Store’ in 1972, asked him to run the store as proprietor for maintaining the family. 

Though he was right hand disabled person he became a famous businessman in the district town through his business in very short time. All educational expense and fees was paid by him. His sisters and brothers completed graduation and master degrees. They are now high officials of different sectors of Bangladesh.

Mr. Mukul directly was involved to establishing Sombaya New Market, Green Arrow Club, Misti Mukh (a sweetmeat shop) and Abdullah City Market. On the other hand he organized to form Dokan Malik Samity, Paribeshok Samity and Restaurant Malik Samity. 

There was no prestigious market in the district town. He took an initiative to set up a market on land of Consumers Cooperative Multipurpose Society of Chuadanga with the help of Mahatabuddin, Younus Miah, Noorul Islam. About 156 rooms were constructed in 1984 for running the market. 

Over 500 youths and men were provided works in the market. The name of the market was settled `Somobaya New Market’. The market was inaugurated by Nooruddin Al Masud, Khulna Divisional Commissioner. Deputy Commissioner Azizul Hoque Bhuiya was present in the inaugural session.  

Green Arrow Club was established under the auspices of some elite of the town for progressing sports and cultural works of youths and others. Mr. Mukul was one of member of the committee for installation the club in 1979. 

He formed a committee of `Chuadanga Poribeshok Samity’ in 1999. Members of the samity keep contribution for successfully completion of different national programs and crisis period of Bangladesh. Now the samity’s members are 130. Over 400 are leading their lives through the market. 

 Abdullah City is a big market in the district town. Mr. Swopon completed the construction of the market in 2018 by advising and assistance of Mukul. About 400 families depend on the market.

Now he is the proprietor of Misti Mukh. Chuadanga Restaurant, Residential Hotel, Sweetmeat Shop and Bakery Owner Samity have been formed recently.  He was elected as president of the samity. 

Golam Mahbub Mukul told The Bangladesh Post that disabled person is not burden to the society. Every disability has any quality to face the nature. So request all to give them opportunity to do work. 

He again said that he was an enlisted disabled person of Social Welfare Department. He is grateful to the government and social welfare department for help for the disabled. 

Sontos Kumar Nath, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Department said that a total of 21,900 disabled persons were in the district. Of the total 5,000 disabilities are in Chuadanga sadar upazila, 4,700 in Damurhuda upazila, 9,000 in Alamdanga upazila and 3,200 in Jibannagar upazila. 

He also said that the present government has taken them under allowance and providing different types of job according their capacity.
