Sylhet, CTG emerge champions in Sheikh Russel Beach Football Tournament

Sylhet and Chattogram Division emerged champions in the Sheikh Russel Boys and Girls Under-15 Beach Football tournament respectively after defeating their rivals in the final encounter on Friday. 

Organised by the Directorate of Sports of Bangladesh, a total of 16 teams of eight divisions from across the country participated in the three-day Sheikh Russel Beach Football Tournament took place at the Kolatoli Point of Cox’s Bazar Beach, Chattogram.

In the Boy’s final, Sylhet Division outplayed the hosts Chattogram by 4-0 to win the trophy when the girls’ team of Chattogram just took the revenge of the boys’ with a 4-1 victory over their Sylhet counterparts to celebrate the title of Girls’ division.

Presided over by Zahid Iqbal, Additional District Commissioner (ADC) of Cox’s Bazar, Dr Mohiuddin Ahmed when addressed in the prize giving ceremony as the chief guest told that the members of the Father of Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were passionate lovers of sports. Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Bangabandhu was one of the victims of the brutal killing by the assassinates on 15th August 1975.

With the objective of great tribute to Sheikh Russel and memorizing him, Directorate of Sports of Bangladesh, under the Sports Ministry have been organising the Sheikh Russel Beach Football Tournament every year in Cox’s Bazar.  Dr Abul Hossain, additional secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, ANM Tariqul Islam, director of the Directorate of Sports of Bangladesh and additional secretary, Fazle Elahi, deputy secretary of the Sports Ministry, deputy director SIM Ferdous Alam of Directorate of Sports of Bangladesh and former national footballer Rakibul Islam also addressed in the of prize giving ceremony. 

Meanwhile, Moeen Uddin Milki, sports officer of Cox’s Bazar District Sports was also present in the occasion.
