Sylhet city as well as low-lying areas in the district has been flooded as three major rivers -- the Surma, Kushiyara and Sari-Gowain - are flowing over the danger level due to a downhill onrush of water triggered by heavy rainfall in India.
Several lakh of people have been marooned since the flood situation has worsened in 11 upazilas and the Sylhet city area as well. Kanaighat, Zakiganj, Gowainghat, Jaintiapur, Companiganj, Sadar, Golapganj, Beanibazar, Biswanath, Dakkhin Surma and Fenchuganj upazilas have been submerged, causing food and drinking water crisis to hundreds of dwellers.
Crop lands, fisheries, households, business establishments, educational institutions as well as roads have also gone under knee-deep water in these areas. According to the Water Development Board (WDB) officials, the Surma was flowing 149cm
above the danger level in Kanaighat point while filing the report this evening while it was flowing 32cm beyond the danger mark in Sylhet point.
The Kushiyara was flowing over 148cm above the danger mark in Amalsheed point while it was flowing 46cm beyond the danger level in Sheola point. Besides,
the water of all rivers in the district is in rising trend.
Senior Meteorologist at the Sylhet met office Syed Ahmad Chowdhury said the rain will continue for the next 48 hours in the district.
According to the Deputy Commissioner's Office, the district administration is
continuing distribution of rice among the affected people. Besides, the union parishad chairmen have also started distributing relief items in their respective areas.
Local lawmaker Hafiz Ahmad Mazumder has visited the submersed areas in his constituency.
