Syed Ashraful Islam’s mural vandalized, one arrested

In Kishoreganj, miscreants vandalized the statue of late Syed Ashraful Islam, former Public Administration Minister and General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League. The incident took place at Syed Nazrul Islam Chattar area near Akhra Bazar Bridge in the district town on Thursday night.

Hearing about the incident, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shamim Alam, Superintendent of Police Mashrukur Rahman Khaled, Kishoreganj Municipality Mayor Md Parvez Mia, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Qadir Mia and Executive Magistrate Mahamudul Hasan visited the spot.

Assistant Engineer of Kishoreganj Municipality Rafiqul Islam filed the case with Kishoreganj Model Police Station in this connection on Friday.

Kishoreganj Model Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Bakar Siddique confirmed the matter and said Inspector Joynal Abedin has been assigned to investigate the case. A man named Parvej, son of Shahjahan Chowdhury of Itna upazila has already been arrested in this case.

Deputy Commissioner Moha­mmad Shamim Alam said some miscreants had damaged the 

nameplate and one or two places of the statue. 

Upon receiving the news, I spoke to the police superintendent and the mayor and asked them to take appropriate legal action. 

We will do our best to find those who are involved in such heinous incidents and bring them to justice as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, a human chain was organized in front of the Mural under the banner of Kishoreganj Civil Rights Protection Forum on Friday. At that time, the speakers demanded the maximum punishment of the culprits after bringing them under the law within 24 hours.
