A sudden storm at Shakhipur in Tangail damaged several croplands and vegetable lands. Farmers of the area faced huge loss due to the storm. The storm accompanied by gusty wind occurred on Early Tuesday. 

The banana gardens, vegetable lands and other croplands were severely damaged in the storm. According to the primary information of Upazila Agriculture Office, farmers of banana gardens faced a loss of around Tk 1 crore as the banana trees of their gardens were damaged in the storm till Tuesday noon. The amount of the loss may be increased later. Moreover, the power supply was interrupted in many areas.

Abul Kalam, banana farmer of Pratima Banki village of the Upazila, said that he planted 10,500 banana trees. There were bananas in almost all the trees. Around half of the trees were damaged in the storm of early Tuesday. He is facing huge financial loss.

Another banana farmer of Kalidas village of the Upazila, Alamgir Hossain, said some 4,000 banana trees of his garden were damaged in the storm. There will be very little yield from the rest of the small trees, he added.

Besides, while visiting several areas of the Upazila it was seen that many trees of the area fell due to the storm. Many houses were damaged in the storm, sources said.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Niyanta Barman on Tuesday said the news of damage of banana trees and vegetable lands are coming. Around 40,000 banana trees were damaged so far. Our Deputy-Assistant Agriculture Officers have collected this information. We will inform our high officials after getting the proper information, Niyanta Barman added.
