Hundreds of agitating students of Shailkupa govt. degree college in Jhenidah came to street on Sunday at the upazila headquarters. They brought out agitated rally and blocked the road in the town for two hours protesting alleged negligence, refrainment from taking examinations of science classes, and some other irregularities by the teachers including the principal.

Later they had withdrawn the agitation proggramme   when upazila administration and police officials assured them of taking necessary steps as per the allegation. The blockade created a long queue in the weekly market of the upazila. Some of the agitated students of the college said most of the teachers do not attend classes regularly. Sometimes they enter the campus and leave when they desire. Regular examinations of the science department are not held as per schedule.

Further, the principal, the sole authority, is also ignoring the matter keeping him absent in the college for days together. The negligence of the authorities has broken the educational backbone of the once renowned college established before independence war.  They said they had protested the matter time and again and demanded immediate solution of the problems, while the principal had been ignoring the matter for years together.

They also alleged that winter games and other regular games are not held in the degree college, while the authorities has been availing all government facilities.  It was subversive to the policy and thinking of the democratic government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, students said.

Officer in charge (Investigation) of Shailkupa police station Mohsin Hossain, when contacted said the situation was brought under control when Shailkupa upazila parishad chairman Shikder Mosharraf Hossain Sona, vice chairman Jahidunnabi Kalu and other political leaders and police officers assured them of taking active action to solve their burning problems at an early date.
