It is alarming to note that a total of 364 students committed suicide between January and August. It means some 45 students committed suicide on an average per month during the period.

As the suicide death rate has increased at an alarming pace, we must immediately find out the root cause of the risk factors that are encouraging suicidal behavior among students. Various complications like family problems, love affair related incidents, academic failures and financial crisis threw the students into uncertainty, making them frustrated, demoralised and depressed that led many of them to commit suicide.

Therefore, guardians and teachers must stand beside the students in order to create positivity in their life and make them happy.

Counselling

can help

students deal with depression

and mental health

problems

Counselling can help students deal with depression and mental health problems. In this regard, teachers are in a highly strategic position to build confidence in our students as they interact with them every day.

The students should also be encouraged to face any crisis and pursue long-term, realistic goals rather than running after mirage. Hence, they will be more confident and hopeful about their future and shun the path of committing suicide.

The extent of this problem is worrying enough and if such trend goes unattended once it would have serious social effects. Apart from the parents and teachers, civil society members will also have to take the responsibility of monitoring teenagers to ensure their wellbeing.

All guardians should ensure proper education for their children and pay attention to make their lives safe and secure.  Keeping this in mind, all stakeholders will have to build psychological resilience in young people, raise awareness on mental health issues and stay beside them during any crisis or complication they face. Only then it will be possible to prevent such unnatural death of our students.
