Public transport to resume today

Chattogram Metropolitan Transport Owners Group has called off the public transport strike in the port city.  Public transport will run in Chattogram city from Sunday morning.

Belayet Hossain Belal, president of Chattogram Metropolitan Transport Owners Group, announced the decision after a meeting on Saturday. 

“We have decided that the buses under our association will resume operations on Sunday morning but, today our programme will continue”, he said on Saturday.

Belayet Hossain Belal also said, “Our demand is to reduce the price of fuel or to increase the fare. From Friday till now we have continued our strike peacefully.  We do not want any movement, vandalism, or conflict.”

“In the name of strike, some people are stopping cars on the road and causing misery to the passengers, while others have started picketing.  We have called off the strike thinking of the suffering of the common people.  Our public transport will be closed till Sunday 6 am. I hope the government will take an effective decision in this regard soon”, he added.

Freight and public transport strike has been going on in Chattogram since Friday. Gas-powered public transport was plying on the city roads at extra fare, but the transport workers stopped them at various places and dropped off the passengers on Saturday morning.

 Transport workers took position on the road in Tigerpass area around 9 am.  At this time they were seen obstructing the movement of various public transports.  The victims alleged that the workers blocked private cars and CNG.  Later, the police removed them around 11 pm.  Then all kinds of vehicles started moving.

 Last Wednesday night, the government increased the price of fuel oil from Tk 65 to 80 and issued a notification.  Then on Thursday the owners of buses, trucks, covered vans called for a transport strike across country in protest of the price hike.
