Experts fear that the constant violation of the public health order will increase the infection rate of the Covid-19. We are worried that the efforts taken by the government to control the pandemic may be marred as people in large numbers are still either leaving the city or returning to it.

While the government and private offices resumed on Sunday after the three-day public holiday on the occasion of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr, the ongoing nationwide lockdown has been extended for another week from today to May 23.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, authorities concerned and experts have repeatedly requested the people to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr at their present locations to stop the further spread of coronavirus throughout the country. Besides, the World Health Organisation issued a grim warning, saying the world is on track for the second year of this pandemic to be far more deadly than the first.

A number of

initiatives by the government and non-government

 bodies must be taken immediately

to increase awareness among the

people

Country’s Covid-19 situation came under control to some extent because of the government’s all-out efforts but now we fear it may go beyond control if the return journey of Eid home-goers to their workplaces makes a mad rush. And that is why the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has recommended delaying the return journey of the people who went home to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr. In this regard the government has sought cooperation from all to this end lest the India-like situation takes place in the country.

We think a number of initiatives by the government and non-government bodies must be taken immediately to increase awareness among the people. Yet, we believe Bangladesh would overcome the coronavirus crisis to achieve its cherished goal of progress and prosperity under the dynamic leadership of Sheikh Hasina as the country did in the past.

Therefore, we all will remain careful at the highest level to follow health safety guidelines by avoiding crowds in view of the second wave of the pandemic.
