‘Steps taken to export quality fish in World market’

Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim said the government has taken various steps to export quality fish as per the demand of the international market.

The minister made the remarks while addressing a presentation and discussion meeting titled 'Revitalizing Black Tiger Shrimp', one of the events of Sea Food Expo North America (SENA) organized by Global Sea Food Alliance in Boston, USA on Monday.

Shyamal Chandra Karmakar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock of Bangladesh, Mohammad Monirul Islam, Consulate General of Bangladesh in New York, George Chamberlain, President of Global Sea Food Alliance, Syed Mahmudul Haque, Chairman of Bangladesh Shrimp and Fisheries Foundation were present on the occasion.

The Minister further said, “Infrastructure development, supply of disease free fry, establishment and operation of international standard quality control laboratory, necessary laws are being formulated and implemented to ensure high production and quality of fisheries in Bangladesh. The government has enacted a new law entitled Fisheries and Fisheries Products (Inspection and Quality Control) Act 2020. To ensure quality of shrimp, Production and supply of disease free shrimp fry following scientific best practices, strict enforcement of law and other necessary steps are being taken. ‘Fish and Fishery Products Official Control Protocol’ and ‘The Aquaculture Medicinal Products Control Guidelines’ are being formulated and followed. In addition, necessary assistance has been provided to increase the productivity of shrimp farmers and cluster farming practices have been initiated in shrimp farming.”

The Minister also sought the cooperation of the Global Seafood Alliance and others concerned for the introduction of third party certification of shrimp in order to achieve higher prices of Shrimp in the international market.

Representatives of different countries congratulated the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock of Bangladesh for participating in the discussion.

Later, the Minister inaugurated a web portal called 'Revitalization of Black Tiger Shrimp Community'.
