Steps taken to address food security challenges

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder has said that priority has been given to the food and nutrition sector to address the food security challenges in an integrated manner.

He said that the goal of the present government is to build a hunger-free, self-reliant and developed country. In order to achieve this goal, comprehensive activities have been undertaken to make the food management of the country more practical and stronger like other sectors, he added.

He made the statement while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled “Stage-Three: Member State Dialogue” organized in preparation for the UN Food System Summit 2021 at the Parjatan Bhaban auditorium in city’s Agargaon on Sunday morning. Sadhan Chandra Majumder said one of the fundamental rights in the constitution of Bangladesh is to ensure food security for all.  

“Self-sufficiency in food has already been achieved under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The government is currently working to ensure nutritional security for all,” he added. 

He said the United Nations is going to organize ‘Food System Summit’ in 2021 with the aim of achieving sustainable development by 2030. The Ministry of Food of Bangladesh has been nominated as the national convener of dialogue for the preparation of the Food System Summit. 

The Food Minister further said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had dreamed of turning Bangladesh into a middle-income country by 2021.  Food Secretary Dr Mst Nazmanara Khanum chaired the function.

Vice Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Prof Dr Lutful Hasan, Mia Seppo, UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Robert D. Simpson, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative in Bangladesh and Dr Rudaba Khandaker, GAIN’s Country Director spoke during the event as special guests.
