With the Eid-ul-Fitr festival approaching nearer, people have started rushing to markets across the country for Eid shopping. We fear rise in mugging and snatching incidents amid the ongoing shopping spree.
Every year Malam party, Agyan party and snatching groups become active ahead of the Eid festival ever year. Besides, various gangs involved in fake currency trade, mugging and toll collection become active ahead of the festival. Criminals produce and circulate fake currency across the country targeting large-scale cash transaction at different markets, shopping malls, business centres and other crowded places like bus and launch terminals and railway stations.
Miscreants like Agyan party and Malom party also become active. Many people lose money and their luggage after getting trapped in their tricks.
The thugs rob their targeted people after doping them with food mixed with sedative or putting balm in their eyes while they travel on the streets and highways in the capital Dhaka, other metropolitan cities and district towns across the country. With the increase in the Eid shoppers at various shopping malls and banks, snatchers are roaming everywhere, including capital Dhaka, creating a sense of insecurity among city people.

Apart from this, extortionists in all the cities, including capital Dhaka target businessmen, particularly small traders. They have already started collecting tolls from traders in the cities, towns and even remote areas.
Besides, the organised gangs also are active on highways especially between midnight and early morning. Drivers of buses and trucks also have to pay extortionists a pre-determined amount.
Otherwise, they (the extortionists) would not even allow drivers to run the loaded vehicles. So, the authorities concerned have to take necessary measures, including stepping up intelligence surveillance across the country to prevent these crimes.
Besides, law enforcers should strengthen crackdown across the country, particularly in cities and towns, to nab the criminals.
They will also have to collect information relating to the crimes of fake currency trade, mugging, hijacking and toll collection
To prevent such crimes Eid, the law enforcers will also have to patrol the cities, towns and highways regularly to provide security to passengers, shoppers as well as city residents. Police administration should start distributing leaflets and stickers inscribed with different advices to the passengers and the drivers to avert any untoward incidents. The entire country should be brought under stringent security measures with deployment of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members and policemen for smooth journey of people for Eid festival.
