St. Martin’s Island jetty collapsed

More than two and a half thousand houses have been damaged in the coastal areas of Cox's Bazar district in the last two days due to cyclones Yaas and full moon. 

Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mamunur Rashid said the worst affected areas were Kutubdia upazila, Matarbari in Maheshkhali upazila and Gomatali Islampur union in Sadar upazila of Dhalghata union and St. Martin's Island.

Nur Mohammad, chairman of St. Martin's Island Union Council, said the island's jetty was destroyed by the tidal wave. The jetty platoon is broken. The island's homes and tourist resorts have been damaged by the tidal wave. 

He said the tidal wave had caused landslides around the island.

Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mamunur Rashid said full details of the damage were not available from the upazilas. Full details of the damage will be available in two days.

Deputy Commissioner Md Mamunur Rashid said that according to the initial information received from different upazilas of the district, 16 unions of 8 upazilas have been affected. Affected rural areas 57.46 sq km, damaged houses 160, flooded floors 7 animals, damaged houses 3, 480, damaged crops 52.5 hectares, damaged farms 75.64 hectares, damaged power lines 1 .5 km, damaged roads 21.5 km, damaged dams 5.375 km, forest 23 hectares, number of damaged educational institutions 3, damaged tube wells 45.

Deputy Commissioner Md Mamunur Rashid further said that food has been provided to 5,600 people who have taken shelter at the shelter in Kutubdia.

The low-lying areas of the coastal area have been inundated as the tidal waters caused by the Yas have risen to a maximum height of five feet. Zaire's injuries have also caused extensive damage to the palm trees on Cox's Bazar beach. In many places, palm trees have been uprooted. The sand dunes of the beach are broken.

Cox's Bazar Meteorological Office Assistant Meteorologist Abdur Rahman said the full moon tide will have an effect today and tomorrow.
