Three accused, including two sons of Chattogram-6 (Rauzan) Member of Parliament Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury, have surrendered before a Dhaka court and obtained bail in a case filed over allegations of assault, vandalism and looting during an attempted takeover of an industrialist’s apartment in Gulshan.
The accused granted bail are Samir Quader Chowdhury, Shakir Quader Chowdhury and Marina Irshad.
On Thursday (April 2), they surrendered through their lawyers before the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Junaid and filed bail petitions. Following a hearing, the court granted them bail.
Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain, General Registration Officer of Gulshan Police Station, confirmed the matter.
Earlier, the court had cancelled bail and issued arrest warrants against four accused in the case, including these three individuals and another accused, Ashikur Rahman. MP Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury, brother of Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, is also an accused in the case.
The case was filed on September 14 last year by Farzana Anna Islam, wife of late industrialist Mainul Islam. The court took cognizance of the complaint and directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate and submit a report.
According to the case statement, Mainul Islam and his wife signed an agreement in 2006 with Arefin Shamsul Alam for construction of a six-storey building in Gulshan Model Town. They received possession of the property on December 19, 2007. Mainul Islam died on March 24, 2008.
After his death, Shamsul Alam allegedly attempted to seize the apartment with the help of other accused persons by preparing forged documents to take control of the entire second floor of the building.
The complaint further alleges that following the July 2024 political upheaval, the accused became more aggressive. On July 14, they allegedly entered the house, broke locks of several flats and attempted to occupy them while demanding Tk 50 million as extortion. They also allegedly threatened Farzana Anna Islam.
On August 28, the accused reportedly entered the residence again, assaulted occupants and looted Tk 1 million in cash along with 10 bhori of gold ornaments. They allegedly threatened to seize the flats if the extortion demand was not met. Before leaving, they vandalized the garage on the ground floor, causing damage estimated at around Tk 30 million.
Those injured in the attack later received treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital.
