A court in Sirajganj has sentenced a man to death for killing his mother to death in 2020.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Court Judge Abul Bashar Mia delivered the verdict on Sunday. The court also fined him Tk 50,000.
The convict is Nahid Imran Niyon, 35.
According to the prosecution, Niyon was addicted to gambling. He often demanded money from his mother Rasheda Khanam to repay the loan he took for gambling.
He locked into an altercation with his mother over the matter and at one stage, he hacked her to death on February 18, 2020.
Following the incident Nasim Imran Nishat, younger son of the victim, filed a murder case with Sadar Police Station against Niyon. Additional Public Prosecutor of that court, Advocate Zebunnesa alias Zeba Rahman, confirmed this information.
According to the details of the case and incident, on the morning of February 18, 2020, the police recovered the dead body of former health inspector Rashida Khanam, the wife of freedom fighter Tozammel Haque, from her house next to the Agricultural Development Bank on Mujib road in Sirajganj municipal area. In this incident, Nashim Imran Nishat, the younger son of the deceased, filed a case at the police station accusing unknown persons as the plaintiff.
In the details of the case, he mentioned that on the morning of February 18, Bhabhi Pinki Khatun saw her elder brother Nahid Imran Neon going out of the house wearing a chador. Later, Pinki called her mother-in-law Rashida several times and got no response.
Later the police came and recovered the body. He (Nishat) comes to know that his elder brother Neon is involved in gambling and has borrowed a lot of money from various people. Because of this he may have killed his mother.
In this incident, the police investigation revealed that Nahid Imran was addicted to neon cricket gambling and got into a lot of debt. He was depressed due to debt. He demanded money from his mother Rashida Khanum. As he refused to pay money, there was a conflict between mother and son.
At one point, Neon planned to kill the mother. As part of the plan, on the morning of February 18, he cut the throat of the sleeping mother with a knife, covered the body with a blanket and fled.
He was on the run for a long time after the incident. Later the police arrested him. After his arrest, he gave a confessional statement in court. The court gave this verdict on Sunday based on evidence.
