Sohag’s wife granted voting rights

In a surprising twist, Tasmiya Rezwana, the wife of the former General Secretary of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), Abu Naeem Sohag, has been granted voting rights in the forthcoming BFF elections. This development comes despite Sohag's two-term ban by FIFA for financial irregularities, which has led to his exclusion from all future BFF activities.

Rezwana has been appointed as a councillor for the second division club, Bikrampur Kings, a decision that has ignited widespread debate and criticism within the football community. Bikrampur Kings officials assert that Rezwana has been associated with the club since 2022, holding the position of Vice President. They claim her councillorship was awarded through a unanimous decision by the club.

It is not uncommon for individuals to become councillors at the club level of sports federations through long-term associations or, in some cases, by purchasing the position. Rezwana's appointment has raised eyebrows, particularly given her husband's recent ban and the speculation that he remains in close contact with BFF President Kazi Salahuddin.

Sohag's ban from FIFA, which took effect on April 14 last year, marked the end of his official role with the BFF. However, many within the federation believe that he continues to exert influence behind the scenes. The fact that Rezwana is now a councillor in the upcoming elections is seen as a sign of this ongoing connection. If Rezwana secures her position, it is expected that Salahuddin's trusted allies, including Mahfuza Akhtar Kiron, will benefit from assured votes. While Sohag himself is barred from football activities, there are no legal restrictions preventing his wife or family members from participating in the Football Federation's affairs.
