The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been conducting regular operations in Moulvibazar to prevent smuggling, drug and arms trafficking along the border, stop illegal extraction of sand and stone, and assist people affected by natural disasters.
From January 1 to August 10 this year, the Sreemangal Battalion of 46 BGB under the North-East Region seized drugs and other smuggled goods worth Tk 830 crore 48 lakh 89 thousand 477 in its border areas.
Sreemangal Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Sarkar Asif Mahmud disclosed the information at a media briefing on Monday (August 17).
He said BGB is working to protect the border and prevent smuggling through 211 BOPs under 13 units across four sectors covering 1,204 kilometres of border under the Sarail Region. Alongside regular patrols, special operations are conducted based on intelligence to prevent the trafficking of drugs, arms, human trafficking and other illegal goods.
During the operations, a significant quantity of arms and explosives was also recovered. The seized weapons included four pistols, six airguns, five pipe guns and one one-shooter gun. In addition, 40 rounds of ammunition, 18.33kg of high explosives, 117 detonators and 30 metres of detonator wire were recovered.
The commander also highlighted BGB’s efforts to assist people affected by natural disasters.
Lieutenant Colonel Sarkar Asif Mahmud said BGB remains committed to protecting the country’s sovereignty, maintaining peace and order along the border, preventing the smuggling of drugs, arms and ammunition, conserving natural resources and building a drug-free society.
He added that BGB’s activities would continue in coordination with the local administration to maintain law and order.
