Sirajganj fears flood as Jamuna swells

Published : 18 Jun 2022 08:50 PM

In Sirajganj, the water of Jamuna river is rising rapidly and flowing over the present danger line at Kazipur point of the district. Besides, flood danger has started among the people in the char areas and riverine areas of the district as the water level in Sirajganj point is very close to the danger level.

Due to the rapid rise of water in the Jamuna, new areas along the river are being flooded every day. Cropland is sinking. Intense river erosion has started with that. This has led to fears of dam breaches and floods among the locals.

On Saturday morning, the water level of Jamuna in the hard point area of Sirajganj city has increased by 10 cm in the last 12 hours and is flowing 4 cm below the danger level. Besides, the water of Jamuna at Kazipur Point has increased by 6 cm in 12 hours and is flowing over 1 cm of danger zone.

It is learned that due to the increase in water, the water level of other rivers and canals including Phuljor, Ichhamati, Karatoya, Baral and Hurasagar has been increasing. This is flooding large areas of chars and lowlands. Thousands of bighas of arable land in these areas are losing their crops including jute, sesame, kaun, almonds, vegetables and vegetables, causing financial loss to the farmers.

Khukni Union Parishad chairman Mulluk Chand Mia said at least 20 houses in Brahmangram had been washed away in the river a week ago as a result of rising water. In addition, many homes, educational and religious institutions are under threat. In order to protect the erosion area, the work of permanent dam should be expedited on an urgent basis. The people on the banks of the river have become helpless after losing their houses and crop lands. If the erosion does not stop quickly, huge areas will disappear.

Meanwhile, Harunar Rashid, chairman of the Tekani Union Parishad in Kazipur, said the water level in the Jamuna was rising rapidly. As a result, the char fields have been submerged in the flood waters. People in the char areas are in fear of floods. They are in dire straits with cattle as water rises in the chars.

Zia Munshi, chairman of Sadar Upazila's Kawakola Union Parishad, said the low lands of Char Boyra, Barni, Dorta, Sayashakha and Katanga Char have been inundated for the last four days. Now people are waiting for water to rise in their houses, the way the water is rising, the water can rise in the house within 24 hours.

Nasir Uddin, sub-divisional engineer of Sirajganj Water Development Board, said the water level in the Jamuna continues to rise. If the water level rises in this way, the danger level can be exceeded within 24 hours.

He further said that as a result of rising water, severe erosion has occurred in the char areas of Kazipur, Chowhali, Enayetpur and Shahjadpur of the district.

The Water Development Board is trying to control the erosion by dumping about 40,000 geo-bags in the eroded areas. In addition, 30,000 geo-bags are ready to prevent erosion and another 96,000 geo-bags will be delivered to us within the next week.

Shafiqul Islam, executive engineer of the Sirajganj Water Development Board, said the water level in the Jamuna River has continued to rise, with the possibility of rising water from June 22 to 23.

He said there was no reason to panic even after crossing the danger line, but the Water Development Board was ready to deal with any situation including erosion.
