A brother and sister were burnt to death in an explosion at a building in Charmuktarpur of Munshiganj Sadar upazila. The brother and sister died tragically at the Sheikh Hasina Burn Unit in the capital on Thursday night. Yasin (6) and Fatema alias Nohar (3) fell to their deaths at 9:30 pm and 8:30 pm respectively. Their parents are now fighting to the death in the same hospital. Mother Shanta Begum (28) had 55 percent burns and father Kawsar Khan (38) had 60 percent burns. With this information, Sadar Police Station OC (Investigation) Rajib Khan quoted the doctor as saying that their heartbeat was decreasing.

Earlier, an explosion took place in three rooms on the second floor of Joynal Mia's four-storey building on Shah Cement Road in Char Muktarpur around 4:30 am on Thursday. Five people including four members of the same family were burnt while sleeping. Another burnt neighbor Hritika Pal (4) is being treated at a local hospital.

Munshiganj Sadar Police Station OC (Investigation) Rajib Khan said that initially it was thought that the explosion was caused by gas leaking in the room. All the windows in the room were closed because of the cold. However, the real cause is being investigated. The concerned team of CID police has visited the spot. However, Tariqul Islam Tuhin, assistant officer of Titas Gas, said there was no evidence of gas luggage. However, this may be due to not turning off the gas in the oven after cooking.

Munshiganj Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Hasib Sarkar visited the spot and said the incident was tragic. However, the exact cause of the explosion is being investigated.

Haji Mojibur Rahman Khan, an eyewitness, said that suddenly there was a loud noise from the building. He came and saw fire in 3 rooms. The fire service arrived 40-45 minutes after the incident.

Earlier, locals brought the fire under control. Later, four more burnt persons were sent directly to Sheikh Hasina Burn Unit by car from Shah Cement Company. Other occupants of the building said they ran downstairs in fear.
