The triennial election of the Chitalmari Market Business Management Committee in Bagerhat concluded on Friday with great enthusiasm. Voting took place from 8 am to 4 pm, with 690 out of 707 registered voters casting their ballots. The election was conducted under strict security by the presiding officer, Upazila Women’s Affairs Officer Md. Hafizur Rahman.
The results were announced at 7 pm by Chief Election Commissioner Sheikh Shahadat Hossain Bulu. Md. Shoaib Hossain Gazi, running under the chair symbol, was elected president with 386 votes, defeating nearest rival Md. Shohor Ali Gazi, who received 200 votes. Sheikh Asaduzzaman Asad, running under the football symbol, won the general secretary post with 391 votes, while his closest competitor, Md. Zainul Parvez Sumon (fish symbol), secured 290 votes.
Other winners include Md. Rasel Sheikh (wall clock symbol) as organizational secretary with 502 votes, Md. Raju Talukdar (moi symbol) as treasurer with 470 votes, and Syed Sibbir Hasan (rose symbol) as office secretary with 442 votes.
The last election was held in December 2008, where Sheikh Hafizur Rahman became president and Md. Shohor Ali Gazi general secretary. Due to prolonged leadership by subsequent office-bearers, no election had been conducted since then.
