Shops to remain closed in Sylhet, B’baria

Shop owners in Sylhet in a meeting have decided to keep their shops closed till the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.  Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation Ariful Haque Chowdhury presided over the meeting with the businessmen and traders of Sylhet on Friday.

Businessmen of Sylhet met at a meeting at Nagar Bhaban at the invitation of Ariful Haque Chowdhury. The meeting was attended, among others, by by Awami League Organizing Secretary Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel and Sylhet Chamber of Commerce President ATM Shuaib.

Meanwhile, businessmen in Brahmanbaria have also decided to keep their shops closed before the Eid due to the corona situation. 

According to the sources at the meeting of Sylhet, all the traders have agreed that they will not open any shop due to Corona epidemic before the Eid. They were given an opportunity to discuss openly at the beginning of the meeting. Where all the traders  said that they will keep their shops closed during this corona crisias in the interest of the people of Sylhet. In their opinion, the people of Sylhet should be saved from Corona first. Although some 

traders are not in favour of reopening their markets, Bangladesh Shop Owners Association had long been pressing the government to open shops and malls as traders are hard pressed due to the prolonged shutdown.  Some traders believe that life is more important than trade. They want to survive. So they are not in favour of reopening their shops and markets to save them from Covid-19. 

Some of them said that people are struggling financially with the consequences of Covid-19 spread. Against this backdrop, the presence of customers will very thin in the shopping malls and markets which will be one of the reasons for losses of traders.

It is learned that the government has issued a notification on last week that anyone can keep their shops open for Eid shopping. The government has decided to keep the shops open from next Sunday while maintaining social distance. However, if anyone wants, he can keep his shop closed. Coronavirus infection is growing all over the country. Sylhet is no exception. In such a situation, whether the shop in Sylhet will be kept open or not has been under discussion for a few days.  But on Thursday, for the first time, the traders of Nayasarak, one of the elite business places of Sylhet, announced that they would close all the shops in the area in the interest of the people of Sylhet.
