Shops gutted in Tongibari fire

Two shops in Ariyal Bazar of Munshiganj’s Tongibari upazila have been burnt to ashes during a fire accident, causing a loss of about Tk 5 lakh on Saturday early morning.

Locals believe that the fire broke out from a mosquito coil. Md. Hasan Madbar’s grocery shop, Kashem Sheikh’s tea stall and BNP party office were completely burnt to ashes in this horrific fire. Locals extinguished the fire before the fire service reached the spot.

Grocery shopkeeper Md. Hasan Madbar said the shop was burnt to ashes along with goods worth Tk 1.5 lakh. Kashem Sheikh said he incurred a loss of Tk 50,000 as goods including cigarettes and biscuits were burnt totally. Md. Ali said, “My shop had goods worth of Tk 3 lakh.

Monir Hossain Mollah, the owner of a sweet shop, said, “I also used to keep wood in the shop. The total loss caused by the fire is estimated over Tk 5 lakh”.

Eyewitness Shafi Mizi said, “The fire accident starting at night burnt everything in the grocery store and tea shop to ashes”.

Tongibari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Harun-ur-Rashid said the fire is believed to have started from a mosquito coil.
