Ship congestion at Chattogram port during Eid holidays

Published : 13 Jul 2022 08:57 PM

The number of ships waiting at the outer port is increasing due to the decrease in the unloading of imported goods at Chattogram port.  This is disrupting the operational activities of bulk ships in the port.  The Chattogram Port Authority fears that the reputation of the ship will be tarnished due to its inability to pay the berthing.  The port authorities are urging the importers to unload the goods quickly to address the ongoing crisis.  The congestion is increasing as the garment factories are closed during the Eid holidays and the goods are not unloaded.  Even if the goods are not unloaded in time, the port authorities have warned to collect four times more fare from July 25.

Chattogram Port Authority Director (Transport) Enamul Karim said this on Wednesday.

According to port sources, the garment factory will be closed for more than a week around the holy Eid-ul-Azha.  The factory owners said that the wheel of the factory will be fully operational from July 17.  Meanwhile, most of the products imported in Chattogram port are raw materials of garment factories.  However, the factory owners are not redeeming them as the factory is closed.  This is creating a tangle of imported goods inside the port.  On the other hand, due to obstruction in the unloading of goods from ships, it is not possible to bring imported goods from outer ships to the port jetty for unloading.

According to Chattogram port sources, 10 ships with goods imported through Chattogram port are waiting to be unloaded at the outer port.  These include ships carrying Vietnam, China, Panama and Liberian flags.  These ships carry a variety of food products in addition to the raw materials of the garment factory.

Meanwhile, the Chattogram Port Authority sent a letter to all importers and shipping agents on Tuesday to unload the imported goods from the port.  This letter said that for a long time, imported containers in bulk ships have been stored in dumping conditions inside and outside various sheds in the port.  This is hampering the operational activities of bulk ships in the port.  As a result, it is being delayed to arrange the berthing of the ships in the outer harbour of the port.  This has created a situation where the reputation of the port has been tarnished.  The Chattogram Port Authority has requested all importers to make arrangements for speedy unloading of goods to bring momentum in the normal functioning of the port.  Due to untimely unloading of imported goods at the port jetty, congestion has been created.
