Local theatre troupe Chandrakala Theatre will stage its production ‘Sheikh Sadi’ in the International Theatre Festival in Kolkata, India.
‘Sheikh Saadi’ is based on the life of legendary Persian poet Sheikh Saadi. The play has been written by Apurba Kumar Kundu and directed by HR Anik. It gives the audience a glimpse into the society of Sheikh Saadi’s time where leading intellectuals were often invited to the royal courts by monarchs.
HR Anik has already received the award for Best Actor and Director for the drama at Delhi International Theatre Festival.
The play opens with Balban, the prince of Delhi, inviting leading poets of his time to a literary conference. He invites Sheikh Saadi to attend the conference as chief guest. Saadi’s friend poet Amir Khusrow writes the invitation letter on behalf of the prince.
Though Sheikh Saadi is delighted upon receiving the invitation, he is unable to visit Delhi due to his health problems. He decides to spend the last days of his life in a city named Shiraz in Iran, where he spent his golden years including his childhood and youth.
As the story moves forward, a number of Indian dignitaries arrive in Shiraz. Sheikh Saadi meets up with them and gifts them a number of his books including Gulistan.
