A long-cherished dream of Khulna folks is going to become a reality as the proposal to establish the Sheikh Hasina Medical University in the divisional city has been approved recently. Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) approved the proposal and sent the notice to Deputy Commissioner’s Office of Khulna on September 8.

Taking to media, Deputy Commissioner Helal Hossain said that they had sent a proposal to PMO on August 19 for building a medical university in Khulna in the name of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He said that they made the proposal having a conversation with Khulna City Corporation Mayor, Abdul Khaleque Talukder and Member of the Parliament (MP) from Khulna-2, Salahuddin Jewel.

Mentioning the miseries people of Khulna go through because of living in the coastal region, the proposal emphasised the need for building a medical university in the greater Khulna region. Also the proposal mentions that there is only a single public medical college in Khulna which is certainly not enough for covering the entire division.

In most cases, patients are forced to go Dhaka or abroad to avail better healthcare facilities, the proposal added. The proposal further stated that Bangabandhu and his family passed a plenty of memorable times in Khulna and Sheikh Hasina Medical University might encourage the people of Khulna to nurture those memories in future.

Getting the approval of Sheikh Hasina Medical University, Mayor Abdul Talukder expressed his gratitude to Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina addressing it as a noble initiative. He envisages that the medical university will open up new opportunities for medical research in the region.

In this regard, Khulna-2 constituency lawmaker Salahuddin said, “The launching of the medical university in Khulna will pave the way for conducting medical research in this coastal region. He hopes that when the project is launched, people of Khulna region will not have to go abroad or Dhaka to avail modern healthcare facilities.”
