The number of diarrhea patients started increasing in the capital since the advent of summer.
In the last one week, more than eight thousand patients have been admitted to the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr, b) for the treatment of diarrhea.
According to the hospital authorities, over 1200 diarrhea patients are coming to the hospital daily and most of them are being admitted for treatment. In this situation, the doctors are struggling to provide treatment to such a huge number of patients.
Baharul Alam, chief of the icddr,b told Bangladesh Post that the number of diarrhea patients increases twice a year during winter and summer.
“During this time the average number of daily patient remains between 350 to 400 patients and the
maximum number remains within 1000. However, this time it has exceeded 1200. Most of the patients are adult. The number of children among the patients is comparatively much less. Children are usually infected during early winter.”
Regarding the increase in the number of diarrhea patients Baharul Alam said that the bacteria gets favorable environment in hot weather.
“During this time they can fight and survive for a long time. Moreover, people are thirsty due to heat and do not pay much attention to what they are drinking, ” he said.
He advised not to eat any food outside and drink plenty of water.
“Everyone should refrain from drinking water from just anywhere. It must be ensured that the water is boiled or does not have bacteria or germ,” he added.
