Onion market in Jhenaidah has been witnessing drastic fall. The price reduced to two-thirds in a week, said the farmers and businessmen in the market. They are expecting another fall in the market within a few days.

Farmer Altaf Hossain and Ayub Ali at Shailkupa onion market on Saturday noon said that they sold each maund of 40 kilogram onion at Taka 900 to 1,200. Farmer Amulya Kumar in the same market said he sold his produced onion at Taka 1,300 per  maund. They sold the same between Taka 2,000 to 2,500 on last Saturday, they said.

The farmers said the yield of the onion is better in the season due to favaourabe climate as there was no major natural calamity. Further, attack of pest and disease was not major during the season. It will increase the yield which  fell in last season due to excessive rainfall and hot weather during the harvesting hours.

The present trend of onion price is still profitable as the farmers might reap Taka 65 to 70 thousand excluding all expenses from each bigha of land from the three month spicy crop.

Businessman Jasim Uddin said he purchased the good quality of onion at Taka 1,000 to 1,300 per maund as against Taka 2,400 last week in the same market. Wholesale purchasers from Daulatpur in Khulna, Jashore and Faridpur was not visible in the market due to sharp fall in the price.

The businessman said that he was informed from the wholesale market that there might be more fall in onion price within a few days when the supply will increase. Further, the price might decrease if the imported onion from neighboring India rushes in local markets. It has thrown the onion traders in dilemma, they said.
