Shailkupa UNO ‘embezzles’ grant allocated for river erosion victims

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Shailkupa in Jhenidah has allegedly defalcated relief materials, including rice and cash money, sanctioned for the river erosion victims.

The allegation has been brought against UNO Saiful Islam by some local people, including a freedom fighter.

During a visit at Gorai River eroded Baruria village of Sarutia union under Shailkupa upazila, this correspondent along with some other journalists were informed that the UNO had distributed 30 kilograms of rice and Taka 5,000 to six persons of the village, while defalcated the relief materials of remaining 13.

River erosion victims Arok Ali and Kamal alias Kalam, sons of Turap Ali, Rafiuddin, son of Abdul Jabbar, his sister Momena Khatun, Ayub Hossain and Feroj Uddin, both sons of Afsar Mollah, Yar Uddin, son of Reaz Uddin and Atiar Rahman, son of Khoybar Biswas said the local union parishad prepared a list to sanction some relief for the river erosion victims about 7-8 months back.

But no relief they had received yet. They came to know that the relief sanctioned against their names, were engulfed by someone which they do not know. 

Freedom fighter Abdul Jalil said he was informed that rice and cash money was sanctioned in the name of him and his two brothers Khalil and Abu Bakar, while no relief they could receive till today. 

The freedom fighter strongly demanded investigation into the matter.

Anwar Hossain, a ward member of Sarutia union parishad, said he was involved in preparing the list of the river erosion victims, while not informed at all when the same was distributed among his villagers. 

Chairman of the union Parishad Mahmudul Hasan Mamun, said he sent a list to sanction relief materials for 20 river erosion victims in July last year. 

Additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Jhenidah Arif Uz Zaman said he was informed about some irregularities by UNO Saiful Islam. He will look into the matter, he said.
