Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly to build Bangladesh as ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

We believe none would remain neglected because of topographic feature of any area of the country. Development of each and every people is important for the country’s balanced development.

Only Awami League government always works for the people of country so that they can live in peace. Therefore, none can hinder the advancement of the country as Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina has been in power for 15 years.

Before wrapping up his four-day official visit to Bangladesh, Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on Thursday visited the special economic zone (SEZ) at Madhabram under Bhogdanga union of Kurigram Sadar upazila. Bhutan has already conveyed its appreciation to Bangladesh for offering land for the SEZ in Kurigram, which is 190 km away from the southern city of Gelephu, Bhutan.

SEZ will open a ‘new horizon’

in the area of bilateral trade

and investment between

the Bangladesh and Bhutan.

A MoU was signed in this regard during the King’s visit to Bangladesh. In a bilateral meeting with the King and Queen of Bhutan in London in May 2023, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina proposed setting up of a special economic zone in Kurigram.

Later, the district administration and Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) started proceedings to set up the SEZ. The SEZ will open a ‘new horizon’ in the area of bilateral trade and investment between the two countries. It also helps achieve prosperity in the South Asia region, the two South Asian countries hope. We think the creation of a special economic zone in Kurigram will open new avenues for business and trade between Bangladesh and its South Asian neighbour. Kurigram's proximity to Bhutan can benefit the economic zone, with easy travel access through Sonahali and Roumari land ports, along with the Chilmari river port.

If the special economic zone is established, there will be significant development in business and commerce in Kurigram district. The construction of much-awaited Teesta Bridge between Gaibandha and Kurigram districts nears completion. The rest of work is expected to be completed within the stipulated time. People of Gaibandha and Kurigram have been eagerly waiting to see the establishment of special economic zone and completion of the work on the bridge.
