Sexagenarian Shamu who married a minor girl, has been arrested by police under Women and Child Repression Act. He has been sent to Cumilla Central Jail on Friday noon as per the directives of the court.
At the same time, the 'so called' wife of Shamu, a class-eight student and victim of the case Mariam Akhter has been sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for medical examination.
Meanwhile, Marriage Registrar of the case (Qazi) Sarwar Hossain has also been arrested by police for preforming the marriage deed through cheating by using Register Book and the seal of another Quazi, informed Mohammad Ayub, Officer-in-Charge of Lalmai Police station on Friday.
Officer-in-Charge Mohamad Ayub said, the incident of marrying of a class eight student Mariam Akhter by the sexagenarian rickshaw puller Shamsul Haque Shamu became viral at the social media.
After the incident, Taslima Akhter, mother of the victim, filed a complaint with Lalmai Police station in this connection on Thursday evening. She complained that Shamu has abducted her minor daughter and married her through cheating.
As per the complaint, police called the 'newly married couple' to the thana the same night and after quizzing them, arrested Shamu under a case filed against him under Woman and Child Repression Act.
He has been sent to the jail through the court on Friday morning. The victim girl has been sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital to determine her age and to test whether she was raped.
Police also arrested Marriage Registrar Qazi Sarwar for performing the marriage deed of Shamu and minor girl Marium through using Register Book and the seal of another registrar.
Kazi Mujibur Rahman Sarker, Nikah Registrar of ward-7 under Cumilla city informed, the Qazi claimant Sarwar Hossain of Azgora union of Laksam performed the marriage deed by referring page-54 and 28 of his Marriage Register book which is totally false and forged.
In this connection he said, page-28 of his Marriage Register Book has not yet been used that is why when he came to learn about the incident, he submitted a written complaint with Kotwali Model thana in this connection.
By being informed, Kazi Golam Sarwar contacted him and tried to settle the issue by paying him kick-back. Instead, he called the police and handed him over to the law.
