Severe cold wave threatens chicken farms in N-region

Published : 09 Jan 2023 11:25 PM

At the middle of winter, severe cold wave in Chalan Beel area has started to disrupt normal life. And as the severity of winter increases, the farmers are trying to protect the chickens of the farm by burning high-powered electric lamps in the more than nine hundred chicken farms spread in Chalan Beel area.

In this direction, the prices of all types of chicken have increased in the wholesale markets of different cities including Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Tangail, Rajshahi. And as a result of this, the price of all types of chicken sold at retail and wholesale prices in the last one month has increased from Tk 45 to Tk 55 per kg in all the haat markets of Chalan Beel area, said Yusuf Ali Molla, a chicken trader at Tarash Municipal Market. He also said that due to the increasing severity of winter, most of the chicken farms are not raising new chickens, so the price of chicken may increase in the future. On the other hand, Lutfar Rahman, the wholesale chicken buyer of Dhaka, Ripon Mal, Farid and other wholesale buyers of chickens said that even before Mas Khan, they bought broiler chickens at Tk 140 to Tk 150 per kg and golden chickens at Tk 220 to Tk 240 per kg directly from the chicken farms of Chalanbil area. But currently, the price of chicken has increased in the wholesale markets of Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Tangail, Rajshahi and other districts. Farmers in the chicken farms of Chalan Beel area have increased the price by 40 to 50 taka per kg to sell chicken at wholesale price. And because the chicken wholesalers of different cities including Dhaka buy chicken directly from Chalan Beel 's farm, they are selling all kinds of chicken at higher prices in all areas of Chalan Beel.

It is known that there are more than nine hundred commercial chicken farms of medium, marginal and small farmers in Tarash, Raiganj, Ullapara, Shahjadpur, Pabna Bhangura, Chatmohar, Faridpur, Singra of Natore and Atrai upazila of Naogaon in Chalan Beel. And to meet the demand of meat and eggs in all these farms, golden, layer, boiler, cock, Pakistani layer, turkey and most of the domestic breeds of chickens are reared and cared for.

On the other hand, the day and night temperatures have started decreasing in the Chalan Beel region in the last three to four days. Night and morning heat levels are found to be lower than normal in chicken farms especially for those farmers who have farms in open areas. In addition, the severity of winter is felt more in the cold air in open field chicken farms.

Farmers of Kohit Mahalla of Tarash municipal area. Shamim Hossain said that the current temperature in this area is 17 to 19 degrees in the last part of the day and 14 to 15 degrees at night. And for this reason, in order to keep the artificial heat level of 20 to 25 degrees in order to save the farm chickens, the farmers are trying to increase the heat artificially by using electric bulbs, heaters, hurricane lamps in the chicken shed or house as a brooder method.

Again, as the severity of winter increases, chickens reared in chicken farms are suffering from dysentery, gumboru, mycoplasma, bronchitis, necrotic, enteritis, pneumonia and reo virus. Due to this reason, the farmers of Chalan Beel have to keep the high level of electrical equipment running all the time to maintain the temperature of the farm during the winter season. Farmers Milon Sarkar of Bamihal area of Singra Upazila of Natore district said that the farmers have been forced to increase the price of chicken in line with the cost due to this. He also said that the wholesale price of chicken has increased against the demand in big cities including Dhaka. It is normal that the price of chicken will increase at the retail price in Chalan Beel market.

And for this reason, veterinary surgeon Dr. Shariful Islam  of Tarash Upazila Directorate of Animal Resources emphasized on regular immunization of the chickens to keep the chickens of the chicken farm healthy during this winter.

He advises to be more careful with chickens during this winter.

In this direction, the price of all types of chicken has increased in the last one and a half months in all the markets of Chalan Beel area. The boiler is being sold at the price of Tk 140 in the wholesale market and Tk 180 in the retail market, including Chanchkod, Salanga, Gurdaspur, Naogaon, Gulta, Bamihal, Handyal, Sarat Nagar, Boalia, Mirzapur, Nimgachi, Binsara, etc. Gold is being sold at Tk 240 in the wholesale market and Tk 250 in the retail market instead of Tk 230. Domestic breed chicken is being sold at the price of Tk 350 in the wholesale market and Tk 420 per kg in the retail market. Lutfar Rahman, a chicken dealer in Solanga Bazar, said that the price of all kinds of chicken in Chalan Beel area has increased by Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg.

In this context, Tarash Upazila Animal Resources Officer Sohel Alam Khan said that the farmer should control the temperature of the farm to protect the chickens from the severity of winter. In addition, chickens should be vaccinated regularly. It should be remembered that it is very important to keep the heat level of the farm normal to protect the chickens in winter.
