We are all aware that the world’s wildlife count and sustainability are diminishing significantly since the past decade. Our country is no exception to that as well.
‘Sundarbans Day-2022’ was observed recently with the call to save the world’s largest mangrove forest in the interest of the country. The green activists and the environmentalists said that the biodiversity of the Sundarbans is now at risk due to human actions. People need to step away from destroying the forest, and a sustainable environment-friendly development plan needs to be adopted. They called for stopping the killing of wildlife and planned forest fires to save the mangrove forest.
In this situation, various demands have been raised at different times to save the Sundarbans, including celebrating ‘Sundarbans Day’ nationally. There is also a demand for the formation of a separate ministry for the Sundarbans.
‘Sundari’ trees of Sundarbans are dying due to excessive salinity. Wildlife is also being affected by various diseases by consuming salt water. In the Sundarbans, wild animals are being hunted and people do fishing by spraying pesticides in rivers and canals which threaten the biodiversity of the Sundarbans.
We need to act urgently to
save our wildlife
and forest ecosystems
The government along with a dedicated wildlife department should have policies to manage all wildlife resources, and this includes plants, soil, water, air and animals from every part of the country. In areas with native populations, the people should be included in a partnership with management and every field activity when it comes to village forestry. The indigenous people from village should serve as labours, which will enhance their socio-economic aspect. All the wildlife sanctuary, national parks, marine parks, migratory routes of birds and marine animals etc should be monitored closely and managed by the dedicated department so that no one can harm these wildlife resources.
Our government’s aim should be to promote forest and forest wildlife management practices that are comprehensive of human wellbeing in both cultural and economic way. We need to act urgently to save our wildlife and forest ecosystems with a distinct department, which will be specifically designated for this resolution.
