A seminar examining a United Nations fact-finding report on the human rights situation during the "July Mass Uprising" of 2024 was held at Islamic University (IU) on Saturday.
The event, organized by the social organization "Sochchara," aimed to dissect the UN's findings on the widespread incidents and alleged human rights violations that occurred during the period of national unrest.
The seminar was graced by the presence of IU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Shaikh Nokib Mohammad Nasrullah as the chief guest. In his address, Dr. Nasrullah stated that the report "has brought to light the human rights violations of the past autocratic regime." He emphasized the need for the academic community to deeply understand the issues presented.
"This is part of our awareness," the VC said. "Our task following the presentation of this report is to study it and awaken our own sense of responsibility."
The event featured a panel of distinguished guests, including deans, department heads, and faculty professors from various disciplines. Special external guests included Mr. Zahid Hossain, a UN Governance Specialist and Senior Human Rights Officer, and Barrister Shaikh Mahdi, a lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court.
During the seminar, Sochchara representatives presented a detailed analysis of the "grim reality" of nationwide human rights abuses and oppression during the July uprising. They outlined the report's key findings, analysis, and recommendations, while also advocating for the protection of rights on university campuses.
The seminar was presided over by Rahat Abdullah, President of Sochchara Student’s Network, Islamic University branch.
