As a vested quarter is out to undermine the country’s independence and sovereignty as well as hindering development and democracy, security must be stepped up at all under-construction mega projects and key point installations (KPIs) in a bid to keep them safe and secure. Security must also be tightened at all the jails, considering the recent violence, including violent attack on Narsingdi jail.

In addition, security should be beefed up at the Bangladesh Secretariat, international airports, power plants and government hospitals. Law enforcement agencies, including intelligence agency, should remain alert to foil any conspiracy against the government.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a recent meeting with the national security committee discussed overall security of all mega projects. She asked law enforcement agencies to stay alert and fend off any untoward incident. At least 30 major establishments, including the main building of Bangladesh Television, two metro rail stations, Khaja Tower, hub of the city’s internet data cables, and Setu Bhaban as well as police vehicles were torched and vandalised by the miscreants during the anti-quota movement.

As per the election commitment, the government is working hard to implement ten mega projects as early as possible amid plots. The mega projects are: Padma Bridge Rail Link Project, Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, Rampal Coal-fired Power Plant, Deep Sea Port, Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Project, LNG Terminal, Moheshkhali-Matarbari Integrated Infrastructure Development Project, Payra Sea Port, and construction of rail track between Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar.

All these schemes have been included in the list of fast-track projects. The fast-track projects are usually monitored by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Of them, four mega projects-- Padma Bridge, Karnaphuli Tunnel, Metro Rail Line-6 and Elevated Expressway--have opened to traffic in the last two years. We notice that a vested quarter is still trying to halt the pace of development being carried out by the government. These anti-state elements are now getting angered and frustrated as the work of under-construction mega projects is going on in full swing alongside the country’s advancement in every socioeconomic index.

We think they feel jealousy as the government is implementing development projects one after another including Padma Bridge, metro rail, elevated expressway, Karnaphuli Tunnel, underpasses, upgrading highways to four or eight lanes and reaching electricity to the doorsteps of people. So, they have become desperate to destroy these mega projects.
